For the smooth even texture, jade has long been the preferred material for the carvings. The most common form is a flat disc called a pi that is common as a necklace. Jadeite jade is most valuable for its bright green but can also be lavender, pink, yellow and white. Nephritis is found in less intense spinach green, white, brown and black. The jade is sold in pieces more often than carats. Although the overall color is the factor of greater value, there is also attention to the translucency, the plot and also to the design. Some designs, including moss in black, are of great value.
Both jadeite nephrite that are of great length and very hard although jadeite is slightly harder than nephrite due to its microcrystalline structure.
